Reports by the Hong Kong-based Wen Wai Po say China's economic crimes have rose by 70 percent. The Chinese procuratorial portfolio has in the last five years put on record 207,103 cases of bribery, malfeasance and other functionary crimes. In a breakdown, serious crimes registered 1,541 involved in corruption, bribery and misappropriation of public fund (each case involving more than 1 million yuan, or 121,000 US dollars).

The paper also reports that official suspects at the county level and above amounted to 12,830, and a great number of ranking officials including Cheng Kejie, Hu Changqing and Li Jizhou were prosecuted and punished according to law, retrieving economic losses exceeding 22bn yuan (2.66 billion US dollars).

Besides, in the same period economic cases have increased by 70 percent over the previous span of five years to hit 10,000. Some 90,000 were henceforth sentenced, once more than that of the corresponding period.

Analysts have hereby predicted that fight against serious criminal offence will continue this year, calling on the whole nation to join in anti-separatists & anti-terrorists campaign and prevent & punish criminal acts committed by cult organizations so as to safeguard the national security.

In the meantime, the procuratorial portfolio nationwide will intensify investigation and prevention of crimes taking advantage of duty, putting emphasis on cases committed by officials at director ranking and above, those concerning staff members of judicial departments taking bribes and malpractice of justice, and those referring to government employees who acted as backing or shield for evil forces and abused their power participating in, covering up and winking at activities undermining the market economic order.
