Kuwait on Wednesday reiterated that the "last chance" for Iraq to avert a looming war is for President Saddam Hussein to step down.

Speaking to reporters after meeting a visiting Egyptian parliamentary delegation, Kuwaiti State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammad Sabbath al-Salem al-Sabbah said that Saddam's exile was "the most suitable way out of the regional crisis."

He was referring to the initiative put forward by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the Arab League summit held in early March.

"Such an initiative would allow the Iraqi government to re-establish the credibility it has lost over the past dozen years," al-Sabbah said.

The minister said Kuwait believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and that "all needed precautions should be taken to prevent any Iraqi attack".

Meanwhile, he reiterated that Kuwaiti armed forces would not take part in any military action against Iraq.

The United States and Britain have massed about 250,000 troops in the Gulf region, and threatened to invade Iraq under the name ofdisarming Baghdad of weapons of mass destruction.

Kuwait, which was liberated from Iraqi occupation in the 1991 Gulf War by the US-lead coalition, fears of Iraqi retaliation if the war breaks out. The tiny kingdom is currently hosting about 140,000 US-British troops poised for the Iraqi invasion.
