UN Chief Shocked Over Assassination of Serbian PM

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was shocked by the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, who was gunned down earlier Wednesday in Belgrade, a UN spokesman said.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan was shocked by the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, who was gunned down earlier Wednesday in Belgrade, a UN spokesman said.

"The secretary-general was shocked and saddened this morning tolearn of the assassination of Serbian Premier Zoran Djindjic," Fred Eckhard told reporters.

Annan "deplores this act of political violence marring the process of democratic normalization in Serbia and believes that the perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice," he said.

Annan also extended condolences to Djindjic's family and to thepeople of Serbia, he added.

Nebojsa Covic, a deputy prime minister, said in Belgrade that Djindjic died of his wounds in a Belgrade hospital after having been shot in the abdomen and back near government headquarters in the capital city.

Acting Serbian President Natasa Micic has declared a nationwidestate of emergency.
