Russia
voiced its outrage over the murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic on Wednesday.
"The murder of Serbia's Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in Belgrade on March 12 was met with outrage in Russia," the Foreign Ministry spokesman Boris Malakhov said in a statement.
Irrespective of its motives, this crime deserves the strongest condemnation, and those guilty should be brought to justice, Malakhov said.
"Moscow highly appreciates Djindjic's contribution to Serbia's democratic reforms in an effort to preserve Serbia and Montenegro as a single state," Malakhov noted.
Extending condolences to the prime minister's family, Malakhov expressed hope that "this savage action will not destabilize Serb society at this difficult time in its history."
Djindjic was assassinated on Wednesday, gunned down outside Belgrade's main government building.
He played a pivotal role in the downfall of former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic in October 2000. He also decided to handover Milosevic to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
