Sweden Expels Iraqi Diplomats Accused of Spying

The Swedish government announced Thursday it has decided to expel two Iraqi diplomats, saying they are involved in spying activities among immigrants.

The Swedish government announced Thursday it has decided to expel two Iraqi diplomats, saying they are involved in spying activities among immigrants.

Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson said his government made the decision after a thorough investigation by security police.

The two Iraqis, yet to be identified, are expected to be expelled next week. One of them is Iraqi charge d'affaires ad interim in Sweden, Qassim H.J. Al-Zuhairi, said government sources.

Last week, the United States asked more than 60 countries to expel some 300 Iraqi diplomats, saying they pose a threat to the US interest overseas. The Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed it had received such a request from Washington.
