China to Host FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup Meets in June

China will host two out of the 12 legs in June of the 2003 FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup series, with one in Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region) and the other in southwestern province of Guizhou.

China will host two out of the 12 legs in June of the 2003 FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup series, with one in Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region) and the other in southwestern province of Guizhou.

The fifth leg of the World Cup series is set for June 15 in Hongfeng Lake in Guizhou Province.

Located near the city of Qingzhen, the lake is a reservoir witha water surface area of 57 square kilometers and is at an elevation of 1,245 meters above sea level.

The area is a sub-plateau with a subtropical climate, averaging15 degrees centigrade annually. The Lake, featuring such natural beauty as 178 isles scattered around, is a state-class tourist spot.

Living around the area are such of China's minority nationalities as Miao, Dong, Buyi and Yi, which brings about a unique life style to the southwestern Chinese province.

A 10km course has been set on the lake for the World Cup event.

"I am confident that the natural beauty of Hongfeng Lake as the World Cup venue will deeply impress competitors from home and abroad," said Cao Qingzhu, an official of the Chinese Swimming Association.

"It will also encourage the competitors for good performance there," she added.
