Earthquake jolts Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara

A strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted islands in the province of East Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday, leaving at least two people injured and several buildings damaged, The Jakarta Post online news service reported.

A strong earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted islands in the province of East Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday, leaving at least two people injured and several buildings damaged, The Jakarta Post online news service reported.

Budi Waluyo, an official of meteorology and geophysics office in Jakarta, said the earthquake strongly shook Flores island, in particular in the districts of Ruteng, Ende and Maumere, as well as other nearby islands in the morning.

He said the shock was felt 300 kilometers away in the cities ofMakassar on Sulawesi island and Kupang in West Timor.

He added the quake's epicenter was in the Flores Sea, about 84 km northwest of Ruteng, a district town around 1,500 km east of Jakarta. The quake occurred at about 33-kilometres beneath the seabed.

Hendri Subakti, another meteorology and geophysics official in the East Nusa Tenggara capital province of Kupang, said the quake had damaged a number of houses and buildings, including the pier of Reo harbor.

It was the latest earthquake to jolt Indonesia in recent weeks.An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked various islands in the eastern Indonesia provinces of Maluku and Sulawesi on March 10, but caused no structural damage or injuries.
