The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) has said the evidence supplied by survivors of a Chinese fishing trawler is credible, the official Daily News said on Thursday.

The SLMM will give a ruling on the sinking of a Chinese fishingtrawler off Mullaitivu in the north of the country by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels.

The survivors, both Sri Lankan and Chinese, said that the ill-fated Chinese trawler was attacked by rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels but the rebels have denied thecharge.

"It is hard to doubt what the survivors are saying," SLMM spokesman Teitur Torkelsson was quoted on Thursday by the paper assaying.

"But, for the SLMM, it is also hard to verify their statements," he added. He, however, said there are "other indications" which prove the statements of the survivors.

The Chinese trawler was sunk by suspected LTTE rebels, 33 kilometers northwest off Mullaitivu in early hours of last Thursday. Eight Chinese fishermen and a Sri Lankan national were rescued by another Chinese fishing trawler in the same area.

Bodies of seven Chinese fishermen have been found and seven others are still missing.

The Sri Lankan government on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on the Chinese fishing trawler resulting in the loss of innocent lives.
