Chinese, Guyanan Presidents Hold Talks

Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with his Guyanan counterpart Bharrat Jagdeo Thursday afternoon, exchanging views on bilateral relations and international and regional affairs.

Chinese, Guyanan Presidents Hold Talks
Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Bharrat Jagdeo of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana held talks Thursday in Beijing.

The two presidents exchanged views in depth on bilateral ties and problems of common concern in a friendly atmosphere, and they reached broad consensus.

Hu extended his warm welcome to Jagdeo on behalf of the Chinesegovernment and the Chinese people, saying that Guyana was the first English-speaking nation in the Caribbean region to establishrelations with China. Bilateral ties have developed smoothly in the past 30 years, and the political trust between the two nationscontinues to improve. Bilateral cooperation has been broad and fruitful.

The Chinese government appreciates the Guyanan government's long-standing adherence to the one-China policy and its precious support for China in international affairs, Hu said.

He said the new Chinese government is willing to continue its efforts, together with the Guyanan government, to promote friendlycooperation between the two nations and stable advancement of bilateral ties.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to developing trade and economic cooperation with Guyana, Hu said, noting that the complementarity of the two economies generates great potentialfor trade and economic cooperation.

Hu hoped the two governments will promote contacts between enterprises of the two nations and jointly explore new methods to broaden trade cooperation.

Hu praised Jagdeo's remarkable achievements in promoting domestic political reform, revitalizing the nation's economy and boosting social progress since assuming power.

With respect to regional problems, Hu said the Chinese government is willing to establish and develop friendly relations with all nations in the Caribbean region and willing to develop mutually beneficial cooperation with them on the basis of equalityand on the five principles of peaceful co-existence.

China understands the situations and challenges facing nations in the Caribbean region in the process of globalization and trade liberalization and supports their efforts in the construction of regional integration, Hu said.

Hu hoped nations in the Caribbean region will continue their achievements in the process of integration and self-development.

Jagdeo congratulated Hu on his election as Chinese president, saying he considers it a great honor to be the first foreign head of state to visit China following the assumption of China's new government.

He said Guyana and China share a long-standing relationship andbilateral ties, which have progressed continuously since the two countries forged diplomatic relations 30 years ago.

He said Guyana appreciates China's comprehensive assistance andsupport for Guyana, and hopes China will lend a hand in Guyana's economic progress.

Jagdeo reiterated that the Guyanan government will continue to adhere to the one-China policy.

The external environment for developing countries is deteriorating. Developing countries are facing the danger of becoming decentralized in the globalization of the world economy, Jagdeo said.

Guyana hopes that developing countries will enhance their solidarity and cooperation to cope with emerging unilateralism in political fields and economic sectors, he said.

Guyana appreciates China's support for the integration of the Caribbean region, Jagdeo said, adding Guyana and China experiencedsound cooperation within the United Nations and other international organizations and the two countries share broad consensus on regional and international issues.

Following their meeting, the two presidents signed two agreements on the protection and promotion of investment and on economic and technological cooperation.
