Japanese LCD Equipment Supplier Establishes China Headquarters in Shanghai

The Japan-based Tokyo Electron Ltd., a world leading supplier of semi-conductor and LCD (liquid crystal display) equipment, recently set up the headquarters of its China operations at the Zhangjiang High-tech Park in Shanghai.

The Japanese company has also rented 18,000 square meters of land in the park to build a new production facility.

The decision was made based on the fact that most of Tokyo Electron's customers have registered at the Shanghai park, which is now the largest and most advanced integrated circuit (IC) industrial base in China, according to Tom Tsuneishi, vice president of the Japanese company.

Tokyo Electron's China headquarters will provide the company's customers on the Chinese mainland with after-sale services, personnel training and technical support in the near future, Tsuneishi said.

Tokyo Electron will also consider producing semi-conductor manufacturing equipment directly on the Chinese mainland in the future, he added.

China's IC market has grown by an average annual rate of 35 percent over the past 10 years, according to authoritative statistics. Demand on the market is forecast to reach a value of 18.6 billion US dollars in 2003.

The Zhangjiang High-tech Park now is home to more than 100 IC-related enterprises, with a combined investment of more than six billion US dollars.

It is estimated that annual sales of IC-related products by thepark will hit three billion US dollars in 2005, or one percent of the world total.
