The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) has failed to verify attackers on a Chinese fishing trawler in sea off Mullaitivu in the north of the country but urged the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger rebels to arrest perpetrators, the official Daily News said on Saturday.

In a reported handed over to the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels on Friday, the SLMM classified the incident as a serious crime and terrorist act but said it cannot say either party is responsible for the attack as it was not in a position to verify the statements given by the survivors of the attack.

SLMM spokesman Teitur Torkelsson said that the SLMM teams investigating into the incident received information from the survivors, LTTE rebels and the police when finalizing their report.

As there were contradictory statement by the survivors of the attack, it was very difficult for the SLMM to verify the fact, he said.

The Chinese trawler Fu Yuan Yu 225 was sunk by suspected LTTE rebels, 33 Kilometers northwest off Mullaitivu in early hours of last Thursday. Eight Chinese fishermen and a Sri Lankan national were rescued by another Chinese fishing trawler in the same area.

Bodies of eight Chinese fishermen have been found and seven others are still missing.

The Sri Lankan government on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on the Chinese fishing trawler resulting in the loss of innocent lives.
