Japan to Work for Mideast Peace: Envoy

The diplomatic adviser to the Japanese cabinet stressed here on Saturday that Japan will work with regional countries to promote Mideast peace.

"Stability and welfare of the Middle East is one of Japan's maingoals," Yukio Okamoto told reporters after meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher.

The Japanese envoy said he discussed with Maher the latest Mideast situation and arrangements for a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to Egypt in late May.

As for the Iraqi issue, Okamoto said his country is looking forward to cooperating with Egypt to help rebuild Iraq.

Okamoto arrived here Friday afternoon for a three-day visit to Egypt to lay ground work for Koizumi's upcoming Mideast trip, whichwill also take him to Saudi Arabia.

Japanese government spokesman Yasuo Fukuda announced on Thursdaythat Koizumi will start a five-day trip to the United States, SaudiArabia and Egypt on May 22 for talks on issues concerning Iraq and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

During his Mideast visit, Koizumi is expected to focus on Iraq'sreconstruction and bilateral ties with Saudi Arabia and Egypt to secure stable supplies of crude oil.
