Cyprus President Tassos Papadopouloson Tuesday accused Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash of killing a UN peace plan put forward to the island's Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Papadopoulos said Denktash wishes to convince everybody that the Cyprus issue was solved when Turkish troops invaded the island state in 1974.

Papadopoulos also charged that Denktash wants to maintain the status quo by adopting some measures to show improved situation on the island.

"We shall not miss any opportunity to stress on a daily basis that these measures are not the solution of the Cyprus question. What I want to add is that these measures are not even a step towards a solution," he stressed.

Cyprus has been divided into the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sidessince 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of the Mediterranean island after a failed pro-Athens coup.

Last month, Denktash announced measures to ease restrictions on free movement to and from the island's northern Turkish Cypriot area.

The UN-sponsored talks for a comprehensive settlement to the protracted Cyprus issue collapsed in March in The Hague, as Denktash demanded fundamental amendments to the long-prepared UN plan for reunification.

The Greek Cypriot-controlled government, which is recognized by the international community, said Monday it had communicated UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for resumption of the peace talks.
