The United States has ordered expulsions of seven Cuban diplomats at the country's UN mission who had engaged in improper activities, a US State Department official said on Tuesday.

"The Cubans were being expelled for engaging in activities deemed harmful to the United States outside their official capacity as members of the permanent mission of Cuba to the United Nations," an official said on condition of anonymity.

These activities constituted an abuse of their privileges of residence, he added.

The names of those ordered to leave were not released. There are 37 Cuban diplomats at the United Nations led by Ambassador Bruno Rodriguez.
