The newly-elected Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China would make unremitting efforts for the all-round development of relationship between China and Romania, Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Wu Bangguo said Wednesday.

During a meeting with visiting Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase in Beijing, Wu said the exchanges and cooperation between the NPC and the Romanian parliament make up an important part of bilateral relations.

In the past few years, leaders of the two parliaments kept in frequent contact while contacts among special committees of the parliaments were on the rise, he said.

Wu said the prime minister's visit to China while some areas ofthe country were struck by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)reflected the Romanian people's understanding, sympathy and support of the Chinese people.

He said China had achieved good results and accumulated rich experience in fighting against SARS. However, the country was clearly aware that the struggle was tough and complicated, he said, but China had the confidence to ultimately beat SARS.

Wu said the NPC would continuously perfect and strengthen legislation and legal supervision in the fields of public health and disease control through the whole process of the struggle.

Nastase said bilateral relations were in good shape. He said the Romanian side was ready to promote dialogues between the two governments and exchanges between the two peoples, and he hoped the sound political relations would help promote all-round bilateral cooperation in such fields as trade and economy.

The cooperation between the Romanian parliament and China's NPC plays an important role in the development of bilateral relations,he said, expressing the hope and belief that the parliaments of the two countries would continue to support the development of relations.
