Two passenger trains collided outside a Rome railway station Wednesday morning, injuring 34 people, police said.

The incident, which took place at 8:15 a.m. local time (0615 GMT) near Rome's Tiburtina station, involved the pulling-in Munich-Naples international train and the pulling-out domestic Agrigento-Milan one, which were both traveling slowly.

The two trains found themselves running onto the same tracks near the station. The train from Munich, Germany, hit into the side of the other, derailing about six carriages from the Agrigento-Milan train.

Most of the injuries were simple cuts and bruises, but one passenger had a fractured leg, rescue workers said.

Local prosecutors began to investigate whether negligence or human error had caused the incident. If so, those responsible would face charge of causing a potential rail disaster.

Italian Transport Minister Pietro Lunardi ordered a commission of inquiry to be set up.

Rome police chief Emilio Del Mese said he believed the accident could have been caused by "lack of attention" by one or both of the train drivers.
