Cuba described on Wednesday the recent expulsion of 14 of its diplomats from the United States as a provocation and an arbitrary act.

Cuba "will not be intimidated, neither with this or with other provocation," the Cuban Foreign Ministry said in a communique released on Wednesday by the daily, Granma.

The US ordered on Tuesday 14 Cuban diplomats -- seven in the Office of Cuban Interests in Washington and seven from Cuba's United Nations mission -- to leave the country within 10 days.

The US government claimed that the Cuban diplomats engaged in activities deemed to be harmful to the US, hinting at possible acts of espionage.

The communique said the US decision "is a sign of the growing despair of extremist sections demanding increasing the blockade on Cuba, and new aggressions against its people which have not been defeated."

Cuba "will take its time to respond to this new provocation from the US government," it added.

"With these actions, the US government shows once again that it has launched an all-out campaign of provocation and intervention against Cuba," the foreign ministry said.

With this "arbitrary decision" the US sought to affect the prestige of Cuban diplomacy, it said, adding that the expulsion sought to "produce an escalate leading to the closing of diplomatic representations in both countries."

Cuba considered that the expulsion was an act of revenge for what it termed the recent defeats suffered by the US at the UnitedNations Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland, and in theUN Economic and Social Council.
