Foreign Businessmen Support HK People's Fight Against SARS

Some 27 foreign commercial chambers launched on Saturday a campaign named "Charity Bazaar - We Love Hong Kong" in support of the Hong Kong people's fight against SARS.

Some 27 foreign commercial chambers launched on Saturday a campaign named "Charity Bazaar - We Love Hong Kong" in support of the Hong Kong people's fight against SARS.

Lee Myun Kwan, chairman of the Korean Chamber of Commerce, who initiated the activities, said South Korea is the neighboring country to China. The South Korean businessmen in Hong Kong just want to do something helping Hong Kong to overcome the disease.

Thomas R. Meier, president of the Swiss Business Council Hong Kong, told Xinhua the Switzerland community here is part of the Hong Kong community, "We suffered and strived with Hong Kong people to battle the disease."

A representative from British Chamber of Commerce said that Hong Kong has the high standard of health arrangement to contain SARS and the past month has witnessed "the solidarity of the Hong Kong society."

"We are part of the Hong Kong society. Hong Kong is our home, and we believe Hong Kong continues to be a perfect place to do business," he added.

Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology HenryTang said at the opening ceremony of the campaign that Hong Kong has experienced some of the most turbulent and challenging times in combating SARS, but "through the devotion of our medical staff and the efforts of the government on containment measures, successin containment and control is now in sight."

"This unprecedented crisis has cost us dearly, and yet we are now united as one in supporting our courageous SARS-fighters as well as victims and families affected by this new disease," Tang said.

He said, "We recognize the challenges ahead of us. But we are very much encouraged by the international the business community'sstaunch support for Hong Kong."

"All of our key trading partners have reaffirmed their confidence in Hong Kong's core business strengths. And I think we will bounce back higher than we have done before," the secretary said.
