The Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in northwest China has taken measures to tackle water shortages after the state cut the supply from the Yellow River to the region.

Facing water shortages, Ningxia has dug wells, made artificial rainfall, cut allocations of water for irrigation, set limits on water use and doubled the price of extra water use.

Ningxia raised 200 million yuan (24 million US dollars) at the end of last year and launched a program to dig 4,000 wells. By early May, a total of 3,480 wells had been dug, and are expected to irrigate 40,000 hectares of farmland.

Since Apr. 6, 2003, Ningxia has made artificial rainfall three times, and each rainfall amounted to about 30 million tons.

The Yellow River has been running very low since 2002. The state has cut the water supply to Ningxia from the river in the April-June period this year by 33 percent.

It is estimated that Ningxia will lack 1.23 billion cubic meters of water and 133,000 hectares of farmland may not be irrigated because of water shortages.
