Chen Fushou, a 102-year-old Chinese man who underwent hernia surgery last week, is recovering well in Harbin, the capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, doctors said.

The surgeons who operated on Chen say they repaired a significant hole in the patient's groin using special materials.

They said that Chen Fushou, Chinese for "blessing and longevity", is now able to get up and move around on his own.

"We found an enormous tumor in his left groin when we examined his body," said Zou Xiaoming, a general surgeon in charge of the operation.

"The centenarian was in very critical condition when he arrivedat the hospital because the tumor had invaded his scrotum," said Zou, who is also a professor at the No. 2 Hospital, which is affiliated with Harbin Medical University.

The operation was a two hour procedure, doctors said.

The centenarian had reportedly been suffering from the tumor for more than 30 years, and the tumor had grown in size. When he arrived at the hospital, he had to cradle the tumor in a cloth each time the pain wracked his body.

Doctors said he is recovering quickly.
