Shanghai Plans Massive Suburban Development

East China's Shanghai Municipality has unveiled an ambitious strategy to vigorously exploit its vast suburban areas, which account for more than 90 percent of the municipality's land area.

East China's Shanghai Municipality has unveiled an ambitious strategy to vigorously exploit its vast suburban areas, which account for more than 90 percent of the municipality's land area.

Speaking at a municipal conference on suburban development Thursday, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said the city would push for major economic growth in agricultural production, boost the modernmanufacturing industry and accelerate the construction of new towns in the suburban areas.

The mayor said suburban industries will be consolidated to makethe suburban areas Shanghai's major modern manufacturing base. Theareas are already home to booming steel, chemical, hi-tech and automotive industries and nine municipal-level industrial zones.

The tertiary industry, including logistics, trade and commerce,real estate, tourism and urban services, will also receive a boostin the suburban areas, said the mayor.

Han also said that a number of towns will be built in the suburban areas based on certain pillar industries, which would accommodate 500,000 to 800,000 people on the average.

According to an estimate of experts, Shanghai's suburban towns are expected to absorb one million people from the downtown areas,one million people from areas outside Shanghai and one million suburban farmers.

Chen Liangyu, secretary of the municipal committee of the Communist Party of China, said the strategy is crucial to pushing the per capita GDP of Shanghai to 8,000 US dollars.

Sources with the municipal government said once the strategy iscarried out, Shanghai will enjoy enlarged space for industrial layout and industrial development. Its leading role in economic development in the Yangtze River Delta will be further boosted.
