Japan
is preparing to welcome its fist reentry satellite in the sea next Monday, Kyodo News reported Monday.
The geostationary satellite, dubbed Unmanned Space Experiment Recovery System (USERS) is expected to reenter into the atmosphere and fall in the sea near Minami Torishima Island, some 2,000 kilometers southeast of Tokyo around 8:30 a.m. (2330 GMT) local time, Kyodo quoted the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as saying.
After returning, its location will be pinpointed by aircraft via transmission signals from the vehicle, and a ship will retrieve it.
However, the project could be delayed until June 5 if waves arehigh in the area, the ministry said.
The 1.7-ton USERS was launched by an H-2A rocket last Sept. 10,and aboard it were a number of experiments, including one involving production of superconductive materials under extreme low-gravity conditions.
