Zhoushan Archipelago in east China' Zhejiang province, one of the country's four major fishing grounds, has set up a maritime court to deal with a growing number of maritime disputes.

The archipelago, a off-shore city composed of more than 1,000 islands and islets, has witnessed a growing number of maritime disputes, which, up until now, have been handled by the maritime court of Ningbo city on the mainland.

The absence of a maritime court has been a source of great inconvenience for local islanders and the departments concerned and has made the handling of cases quite difficult, according to alocal source on Tuesday.

To resolve the problem, the source said, the Higher People's Court of Zhejiang province has authorized the Ningbo Maritime Court to set up a court on the Zhoushan Archipelago, as authorized by the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) and the Supreme People's Court.
