China's central and local governments are trying hard to maintain steady economic development and keep the loss brought by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) at a minimum.

Maintaining steady development of the economy and preventing SARS are the two most important issues facing the Chinese government.

The Chinese Ministry of Finance announced Tuesday that it will issue 35 billion yuan worth of book-entry treasury bonds to be traded from May 22.

Besides providing about 10 billion yuan to combat SARS, local financial departments will also reduce taxes and fees in a wide range of areas.

The People's Bank of China Tuesday announced that it will carryout seven measures concerning loans to support China's SARS battle.

The Beijing government has also taken measures to reduce the loss brought by SARS.

The short supply of health materials such as masks and disinfectant was eased, and the supply of edible oil, meat and eggs was sufficient.

The Ministry of Health said Wednesday that the Chinese mainlandreported 12 new SARS cases and two new deaths from the disease in the 24 hours ending at 10:00 a.m. May 21. Decreasing SARS cases show the measures taken by the Chinese government are effective and will also benefit the steady development of the economy.
