President Hu Congratulates Mt. Qomolangma Climbers

Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday congratulated a Chinese mountaineering expedition after they reached the summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Qomolangma.

Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday congratulated a Chinese mountaineering expedition after they reached the summit of the world's highest peak, Mount Qomolangma.

In his message, the president offered his sincere regards to the climbers, who scaled the summit Wednesday afternoon, a week before the 50th anniversary of the first successful ascent of the world's highest peak.

He praised the climbers, who placed another five-starred Red Flag on the peak, for their bravery, persistence, solidarity, and team spirit during their endeavor.

He described their endeavor as an heroic undertaking, which brought honor to the motherland, and boosted the courage and confidence of the Chinese people who were striving for double victory in the fight against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and for economic development.

The president said their "brave action" had again proved that the Chinese people could cope with all difficulties and risks.

The climbing was transmitted live by the China Central Television (CCTV).
