A 460-year-old stone table used in an ancient temple has been unearthed in Qingxian County of
Hebei
Province.
Workers on a construction site in Juedao village found the relic, a columnar stone object 53 centimeters high and 33 centimeters in diameter with a pronounced bulge around its middle.
Words inscribed on the table indicated that it had been given to a nun named Chengxiu by two people named Yuan Lan and Zhang Mao.
The table was used for ceremonial purposes in pagodas as a memorial to dead nuns or monks.
Similar objects were commonly used to support wine urns in public drinking houses.
Juedao village, meaning discovering truth, is famed for Lao Zi,the founder of Taoism, who once taught Taoist doctrines here.
Historical records show that Taoism and Buddhism once flourished in the village and many monks and nuns worshipped in temples here about 500 years ago.
