The leaders of China and Eritrea exchanged messages of congratulation on Saturday on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

China and Eritrea have forged good state-to-state relations and good ways of cooperation. Ever since they established diplomatic ties in 1993, the mutual trust and mutual understanding have forged and their bilateral relations have developed healthily and continuously, said Chinese President Hu Jintao in his message.

The Chinese leader also expressed his appreciation of the Eritrean government's consistent stand of sticking to the one-China policy against separatism and its support to China in international affairs.

The cooperation based on mutual benefit between the two countries has been fruitful, Hu said.

In his message, Hu pledged to work together with the Eritrean people to bring the bilateral friendship to a higher level.

Meanwhile, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki said in his message that the two countries have enjoyed long-standing ties.

In the past 10 years of diplomatic relations, cooperation between the two countries has grown substantially to encompass investment, trade and significant technical and development assistance by China, said Afwerki.

"It is also my sincere wish to further enhance and deepen the cooperation and friendship between our two sisterly countries that happily exist for more than a decade," Afwerki said.

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing also sent greetings to his Eritrean counterpart, Ali Said Abdella, to mark the occasion.

As learned, a commemorative stamp was jointly issued on Friday by the postal authorities of China and Eritrea to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

A series of functions and activities, such as the Chinese Movie Week, the inauguration of Eritrea's largest hospital, which is a grant of the Chinese government, and a cocktail party, were held in Asmara, capital of Eritrea, to celebrate the occasion.

Eritrea obtained independence from Ethiopia in 1993. The State of Eritrea was established on May 24, 1993, under the auspices of the United Nations.
