China to Provide Sri Lanka Relief Assistance

The Chinese government decided on Tuesday to provide Sri Lanka with relief assistance worth 5 million yuan (about 604,000 US dollars) for flood victims in the country.

The Chinese government decided on Tuesday to provide Sri Lanka with relief assistance worth 5 million yuan (about 604,000 US dollars) for flood victims in the country.

Chinese Ambassador to Colombo Sun Guoxiang conveyed the decision to the Sri Lankan government when he met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe early on the day at the prime minister's office.

During the meeting Sun said that China's assistance to Sri Lanka at the time when China itself is also suffering from flood in the south demonstrates the long time friendship between the two countries.

Wickremesinghe briefed Sun on the latest situation in the flood areas in his country. He expressed the Sri Lankan government's appreciation for China's "generous contribution" to help his country deal with the current difficult situation caused by worst flood in his country in more than five decades.

"China is always ready to help Sri Lanka at the time of need."he said.

A total of 250 people have been confirmed dead in the flood inthe south of the country, where over 50,000 houses have been damaged with more than 160,000 families affected.
