Germany's former president Richard von Weizsaecker called on Germany and the United States to reconcile their differences.

The chilled relationship between the two countries could be repaired, said Weizsaecker, who was German president between 1984 and 1994.

He said in an interview with the mass-circulation Bild newspaper published Saturday that both sides have "vital interests" and common "democratic foundations."

He pointed out there are strong economic relations between bothsides of the Atlantic, and both sides "need each other to handle decisive tasks in the world" such as world trade issues and the fight against terrorism.

Weizsaecker said the upcoming G8 summit in Evian, France shouldbe the stage for German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and US President George W. Bush to approach each other.

"Cultivating personal animosity is not responsible politics," he said. "Both sides should take forceful moves."

Earlier this week, US National Security Advisor Condoleeza Ricesaid Bush would not have a one-on-one meeting with Schroeder.

The two would be meeting only within the framework of the G8 summit.
