US police arrested Eric Rudolph, the longtime fugitive charged with the 1996 Olympic Park bombing, in North Carolina early Saturday, Justice Department officials said.

Rudolph was spotted and arrested early Saturday as he was digging a trash bin in the mountains in North Carolina, police sources said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed his identity through his fingerprint.

Rudolph, a 36-year-old Army veteran, had been on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list and had been offered one million dollars as reward for his capture.

US authorities believe that on July 27, 1996, Rudolph placed a bomb in Atlanta's crowded Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Olympics.

Rudolph was charged in 1998 with that Olympic bombing and threeothers attacks at a gay nightclub in Atlanta, an office building north of Atlanta in 1997, and at an abortion clinic in Birmingham in 1998.

In all, two people were killed and more than 100 wounded in theattacks, the FBI said.

Rudolph, a Florida native who moved to western North Carolina in 1981, was believed to be a member of Christian Identity, a white supremacist religion that is anti-gay, anti-Semitic and anti-foreigner.
