Russia and the United States vowed St. Petersburg on Sunday to boost their strategic partnership.

At a joint press conference after talks with his US counterpartGeorge W. Bush Sunday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the two leaders had confirmed their determination to improve bilateral relations.

"The fundamentals of the Russian-American relationship have proven to be stronger than what separated us," Putin said.

"What counts most is that the Russian-American partnership is not isolated but serves as a factor for uniting the world community in the face of new global challenges," he said.

The two leaders agreed to "intensify interaction to strengthen strategic stability, fight terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, work together on settling regional conflicts, and ensure progress in bilateral ties in all areas," Putin said.

"Of course, we are aware of the opinion that the Russian-American relationship has experienced a test. We have been asked whether the two countries can stand this test," Putin said.

"President Bush and I confirmed that partnership between our countries, based on mutual respect and the recognition of each other's interests, is unshakable," he added.

Referring to the situation in the Russian republic of Chechnya,Bush noted that the United States supported Russia's efforts to seek a final solution to the issue, and that the US and Russia were doing more to counter threats posed by international terrorism.

Bush also told reporters that he had invited Putin to visit Camp David in September this year.
