The Chinese central government has approved the use of 756 million yuan (91 million US dollars) of Japanese government loans by central China's Hubei Province for afforestation.

This is the 20th afforestation project implemented by Hubei with the use of foreign funds, which have totaled one billion yuan(121 million dollars).

Hubei began its cooperative project of afforestation in 1981, when it received 1.7 million US dollars from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to plant olive trees.

Since then, such cooperation has expanded from afforestation totechnical cooperation.

Over the past two years, the province has launched a number of new projects, including those funded by Japan and Germany. Meanwhile, its Liangzihu Wetlands project was also put on the priority list for cooperation by the World Wildlife Fund.
