CPPCC Leader Meets Mayor of Berlin

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Thursday thanked Germany for its help fighting severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Thursday thanked Germany for its help fighting severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, met Klaus Wowereit, mayor of Berlin, on Thursday.

He said the mayor's visit at such a time indicated the strong support Germany had extended to China.

The German government gave 10 million euros in aid to China within the framework of bilateral financial cooperation. A number of German firms, including Siemens, also provided medical equipment worth more than 100,000 euros.

Jia said China wanted to expand relations with Germany and the bilateral ties had been strengthening. He said China was ready to work with Germany to advance bilateral cooperation.

Wowereit said his current visit to China demonstrated the sympathy and support of the German people to the Chinese people and of Berlin to Beijing. He said China's efforts in the prevention and control of SARS had been successful and he believedChina's health-care system and infrastructure would be strengthened.

The mayor said there were a lot of areas where Berlin could cooperate with Beijing. He hoped the two sides would expand cooperation in culture, sports, urban planning and infrastructure construction.
