Poachers Sentenced in NW China Province

Fifteen suspects accused of slaughtering state-protected animals in three cases have been arrested and three were sentenced last month in northwestern China's Qinghai Province.

Fifteen suspects accused of slaughtering state-protected animals in three cases have been arrested and three were sentenced last month in northwestern China's Qinghai Province.

Li Qingping and Li Wenfu, found guilty of slaughtering eight state-protected wild asses at the beginning of this year, were sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment and fined 5,000 yuan (602 USdollars) by the Gormo Intermediate People's Court.

Another suspect, Ma Rubiao, who purchased and sold 26 snow-pheasants, was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and fined 5,000 yuan by the court.

In the past several months, forest rangers in the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve, located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, confiscated three rifles with more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition, six jeepsand one truck from the three gangs of poachers.
