A house belonging to a ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front official was petrol bombed in Harare' s low income and populous suburb of Mbareon Friday on the last day of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change's (MDC) mass protests against the government.

Property worth 10 million Zimbabwean dollars (about 12,136 US dollars) was destroyed in the process, but Edward Chataika's family escaped death.

Seven children aged between four and 15 who were asleep in one of the bedrooms were ferried out of the house unconscious by some neighbors at around 3 a.m..

One of the children, Joseph, dashed out of one of the rooms after blankets caught fire and ignited some electrical appliances.

Chataika said he was awakened by an explosion of the petrol bombs before he fired several warning shots in the air.

"When I dashed out of the house," he said, "I saw a truck driving away, but was not able to see its occupants properly."

The five-day MDC mass protests failed to attract the much needed attention, resulting in no marches taking place as earlier announced.
