Abundant rains contributed to reducing the number of sandstorms in northern China in the spring this year, officials from the China Meteorological Administration said here Friday.

Li Huang, deputy director of the administration, said that northern China had experienced two sandstorms this spring, the lowest number in the last 10 years.

"And not one sandstorm struck Beijing this spring, which is a historical rarity," said Li.

Meteorologists say that this type of weather results from the frequent movement of cold air over the regions and increased dryness due to rising temperatures in spring, resulting in top soil that can be easily blown away.

The decline in sandstorm frequency this spring is attributed mainly to this year's abundant rainfall in northwest China and to the fact that the vegetation in these areas, including Xinjiang and Qinghai, is much more abundant than in previous years, according to them.

Meanwhile, most parts of north China, especially the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, experienced significant rain and snowfall this spring, which effectively curbed sandstorms, according to Li.

In addition, winds and other cold fronts in the country this spring were less severe and shorter than before, which also contributed to curbing sandstorms.
