Guangzhou Reports Dramatic Rise in Industrial Output

In spite of the negative impact of SARS, the city of Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, registered record high industrial output in May, according to figures issued Saturday by the local statistical bureau.

In spite of the negative impact of SARS, the city of Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, registered record high industrial output in May, according to figures issued Saturday by the local statistical bureau.

Guangzhou registered 39.1 billion yuan (some 4.7 billion US dollars) in industrial output value in May, a 25.4 percent year-on-year rise.

The city's figure for April was 23.9 percent, 7.6 percentage points higher than its March figure.

For the period from January to May of this year, local industrial added value totaled 47.1 billion yuan (5.67 billion dollars), a rise of 18.4 percent year-on-year.

This increase led to a year-on-year 13.8 percent growth rate inlocal gross domestic product during the five month period.
