Multilateral Missile Defense Talks to be Held in Japan

Talks on missile defense systems promoted by the United States will be held from Monday to Thursday in Kyoto, west Japan, with participants coming from more than 20 countries.

Talks on missile defense systems promoted by the United States will be held from Monday to Thursday in Kyoto, west Japan, with participants coming from more than 20 countries.

This is the first time that a Multinational BMD (ballistic missile defense) Conference is being held in Japan.

According to Japanese Defense Agency (JDA) sources, the 20th BMD Conference, sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, will focus on political and technical discussions about missile defense and examining the efficiency of interceptors.

Japan has decided to deploy two US-built missile defense systems out of fear of possible missile attacks. The Japanese government will hold discussions with the ruling coalition on the subject in July.

At the Kyoto conference, a senior JDA official will deliver a speech on how Japan-US research since 1999 has progressed and its effect on peace and security in Asia, the sources said.

Other speeches will cover the status of missile systems in North Atlantic Treaty Organization member states and the development of sensor technology and ground systems essential for precise targeting.
