Saudi Arabia, Yemen Sign Border Agreement

Saudi Arabia and Yemen on Sundaysigned a security agreement to organize border authorities betweenthe two neighboring countries, the state-owned Saudi Press Agency(SPA) reported.

Saudi Arabia and Yemen on Sundaysigned a security agreement to organize border authorities betweenthe two neighboring countries, the state-owned Saudi Press Agency(SPA) reported.

The agreement was signed by Saudi Interior Minister Nayef IbnAbdul-Aziz and his visiting Yemeni counterpart Major General RashadAl-Elaimi, SPA said.

In a press statement issued after the signing ceremony, Abdul-Aziz said that the agreement was related to organizing borderauthorities between the two countries as an implementation of theinternational borders treaty that both countries signed in June,2000.

For his part, the Yemeni minister, who arrived in the Saudicapital of Riyadh earlier in the day for a two-day visit, said hediscussed several issues with the Saudi minister, including thetopics of fighting terrorism, tracking wanted persons andexchanging security information.

The discussions also dealt with demarcation of the border andimplementation of the security accord, signed in 1996, concerningextradition of wanted criminals and cross-border infiltration, theminister noted.

He said his country will open the border checkpoint of "Al-Wade'AA" after the completion of the Saudi procedures on thatregard, adding that the opening date of the checkpoint would bespecified later on during his visit.

The Yemeni minister's visit followed the May 12 Riyadh bombingsthat killed 34 people and wounded 194 others.

Last week, the Saudi authorities found a large amount of armsand explosives in Najran, located in the Saudi-Yemeni border area.Saudi officials have said that they believe the explosives usedin the devastating May 12 triple suicide attacks on residentialcompounds in Riyadh were smuggled into the kingdom from Yemen.The Saudi-Yemeni border is largely not demarcated, and is anotorious hotspot of arms, drugs and liquor smugglers.The two countries signed in April, 2001 an agreement fordemarcating the 1,400-km joint border.
