Chinese workers have started building a freeway in the flood-prone western part of central China's Hubei province.

Relevant experts said Monday that the freeway will be a critical section of the new north-south highway connecting Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi province, and Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

The freeway will join the bridge across the Yangtze at Jingzhoucity to the north and end at Dongyue Temple at the juncture of Hubei and Hunan provinces to the south.

The main road bed will extend 58.4 kilometers, of which, 33.75 km is expected to traverse the prestigious Jingjiang River flood diversion zone. The freeway will have four lanes and be able to accommodate a speed of 100 km per hour.

The construction will cost 2.22 billion yuan (approximately 268million US dollars) and the freeway will be ready for traffic by December 2006.

The mid reaches of the mighty Yangtze River, China's longest, flow eastward through the southern areas of Hubei province.

The most turbulent section of the Yangtze in Hubei is also known as Jingjiang River.

Upon completion, the freeway will link to two other existing freeways and one national highway and will play a vital role in future endeavor for flood control, said Ren Binian, head of the Hubei Provincial Bureau of Communications and also deputy commander in-chief of the freeway project.
