China to Upgrade its Busiest Port

Li Decheng, vice-mayor of Shenzhen, said facilities to be built included a four-lane highway bridge in parallel with the existing Huanggang-Lok Ma Chau bridge, a joint-clearance terminal, a passenger bridge at Huanggang subway station, and upgrading of the existing pedestrian bridge at Luohu Checkpoint.
Huanggang checkpoint is reserved for vehicles and Luohu is mainly for foot traffic.
Construction will be completed within three years, he noted, and building of the western thoroughfare to Hong Kong via ShenzhenBay will also start late this year.
Concerted efforts would be made to ensure an uninterrupted flowof cargo and travelers during construction, Li said.
Shenzhen, the busiest port in China, handled a total of 129 million travelers last year, up about 10 percent from 2001, and 40.78 million tons of cargo for foreign trade in the past year, up 20percent.
The port dealt with 12.49 million vehicles, up nearly 10 percent.
