China's Agriculture Ministry announced here Tuesday that the government would step up the national campaign to safeguard the quality of farm products.

As the result, more Chinese were to have access to safe and eco-friendly farm products, the ministry said.

Vice-Minister of Agriculture Fan Xiaojian told a television conference that the campaign was vital to safeguard people's life and health and he pledged the ministry would invest more in technological innovation and infrastructure construction for the campaign.

The ministry had labeled 244 types of farm products from 155 farming units as safe and eco-friendly, most of which were fish, meat, vegetables, fruits and tea that were staple items for most people, said Fan.

The government kicked off the national campaign in April 2001, aiming to effectively control pesticide residues and contaminationby noxious materials. It also set a goal to markedly improve the overall quality of farm products in urban and rural areas within the next five to eight years.

Fan revealed the next phase of the campaign would center on themonitoring of the quality of the farm products before they were sold on the market.
