Russia would not dispatch troops to Poland's stabilization force in Iraq but agreed to help the country in the mission, Marek Siwiec, head of Poland's National Security Office, said here on Tuesday.

Siwiec made the announcement after meeting visiting Russian Federation Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo. However, he did not reveal what kind of support Russia would provide.

Rushailo said although Russia did not change its stance on the Iraq war, "time has come to rebuild Iraq, its legal structures, togive people jobs" and to create a suitable living condition for the Iraqis.

Polish troops might encounter Iraqi armed groups or criminals during their mission, Rushailo said, adding Russia had experience drawn from Afghanistan and Chechnya, which might be used by Poland.

Referring to Poland's upcoming access to the European Union (EU), Rushailo said Russia was very happy with Poland's recent referendum result and backed the idea of enlarging EU structures without having a negative impact on the relations between the two countries.

Poland, a key European supporter of the United States during the Iraq war, has been given command of a stabilization force in one sector of Iraq, along with British and US troops.

Poland said last week that a force had been formed and more than 15 countries would take part in the peacekeeping mission.
