Five people, including three children and two adults, were killed and another child was seriously injured in a munitions disposal accident in central Russia, Interfax news agency reported Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Tuesday evening at the testing ground of a military unit of the Defense Ministry's missile and artillery department near the village of Krasnooktyabrsky in the Republic ofMarii-El, a ministry source was quoted as saying.

Another defense ministry source said the six victims might have been "searching for nonferrous metal scrap" on the testing ground.

A team of experts is now working at the scene and a criminal case has been opened on charges of violating security regulations.
