The No. 5 generating unit with a capacity of 225,000 kilowatts has gone into operation Thursday at the Dachaoshan hydroelectric power station in Yunnan province, southwest China.

Located in western Yunnan on the Lancang River, the Dachaoshan hydroelectric power station constitutes one of western China's keyconstruction projects.

The project, which has a pricetag of 8.87 billion yuan (over 1.06 billion U.S. dollars), will include six generating units of this type. The first unit started operating on December 26, 2001, and all five units are now operational.

The additional unit will help enhance the province's ability toprovide more electricity for the region as well as for the developed eastern China.
