British airline BMI British Midland announced Thursday that it would cut 1,500 jobs as part of a 100 million pounds or 165 million US dollars cost-cutting exercise over the next three years.

The staff reduction represents up to a third of the airline's 4,000-strong workforce, the BMI said.

It said it is facing the "toughest trading environment for a long time," with hopes of recovery delayed by the Iraq war and outbreak of the SARS virus.

The company posted a pre-tax loss of 19.6 million pounds or 32.34 million US dollars last year and expects to make another, smaller loss this year.
