The all-conquering Chinese divers will not show up at the FINA Grand Prix Super Final to be held from June 14-15 in Tultitlun, Mexico, a Chinese official said here on Friday.

Li Jun, an official from the Chinese Swimming Association (CSA),told Xinhua that with the concerns of SARS, CSA has decided to skip over the Super Final, but aim at more gold medals in the coming world swimming championships in July in Barcelona, Spain.

Li said: "Because of the outbreak of SARS, we have missed several Grand Prix events since March. We don't think it is a proper time right now to compete in the Super Final in Mexico."

"It is a pity that we have to miss the event, but we will pin our hopes to more victories in Barcelona," Li said.

Though the final 14-strong team for Barcelona has not yet been fixed, the Chinese divers are ready to take the world championships as a springboard to Athens Olympic Games.

"We will take the chance as the rehearsal for next year's Olympic Games," Li said.

China topped the medal standings at the world two years ago in Fukuoka, Japan, sweeping eight golds, four silvers and one bronze.

A total of 62 events will take place over 15 days in the world championships, 10 of which will be diving.
