China's Hotel Occupancy Rate Rebounds in June

China's hotel occupancy rate bottomed out in the first week of June as the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic was effectively brought under control in the country.

China's hotel occupancy rate bottomed out in the first week of June as the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic was effectively brought under control in the country.

A recent survey of 108 hotels and restaurants in six major tourist cities including Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, indicated that on June 8, the average occupancy rate jumped to 33.85 percent, up 12.61 percentage points compared with that of June 1.

The survey by the China Tourist Hotel Association also showed that three-star restaurants led the rebound with an occupancy rateof 34.50 percent, followed by four-star and five-star restaurants.

Of the six cities, Shenzhen registered the highest average hotel occupancy rate, surging to 46.51 percent, a rise of 24.96 percentage points from the first day of June.

China's tourism sector has been severely affected by SARS, and at the end of April and early May, the occupancy rate of some hotels dropped to nearly zero.
