The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOC) confirmed Friday that China will sign an agreement with Thailand next Wednesday on the mutual exemption of tariffs on imported goods.

As a first step, the two countries will eliminate tariffs on imported fruits and vegetables beginning Oct. 1, 2003 in advance of the date established by the agenda for the exemption of tariffsunder the framework agreement of the Sino-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) free trade zone, an official from the international department of the MOC told the reporters.

China hopes to accelerate the establishment of the Sino-ASEAN free trade zone by pushing forward the tariff exemption scheme with Thailand, said the official, stressing that the scheme is also open to all other ASEAN member states.
