Jiang Zemin, chairman of China's Central Military Commission, met Friday with visiting Lao leader Khamtay Siphandone at Mt. Yuquan in the western suburbs of the Chinese capital.

Jiang said he was "especially pleased" to meet his time-honored friend Khamtay, whom he had met many times before "to work for the future of China-Laos relations."

Khamtay, president of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and Lao president, is on a state visit to China at the invitation of Hu Jintao, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese president.

Jiang commended Khamtay's talks with Hu Thursday as "fruitful," adding that his meetings with Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao Friday were cordial.

"We believe you can feel for yourself the resolve of the CPC, the Chinese government and people to continue developing overall friendly relations with Laos," Jiang said.

Jiang expressed the hope that the two peoples, through joint efforts, would be good neighbors, friends, partners and comrades for generations to come.

Jiang also commended Laos' efforts in adhering to the leadership of the Lao People's Revolution Party and the socialist road, as well as its achievements in renovation and opening to the outside world.

Khamtay said Laos was grateful for China's valued assistance and Jiang's personal contribution to the development of bilateral ties.

The development of Laos-China relations had been ushered into anew era and Laos would work with China to push forward cooperation and exchanges, he said.
